7 Things to Check Before Buying a Used Leather Splitting Machine
Published: September 2024 | By SAMA Machinery
A used leather splitting machine can be a fantastic deal — you can get a commercial-grade machine that would cost $20k+ new for a fraction of the price, especially if it's a well-maintained Camoga unit. But buying used also comes with big risks: many used machines have hidden wear, worn bearings, or outdated parts that are impossible to replace.
As a company that buys, rebuilds, and sells used Camoga machines every week, we know exactly what to look for. Here are the 7 critical checks you should make before you pay for any used splitting machine.
1. Test the Thickness Accuracy Yourself
This is the single most important test. Run a sample piece of leather through the machine at your desired thickness, then measure it in 5-10 different spots along the piece with a precision caliper. If the thickness varies by more than 0.05mm, the machine's guide rails are worn or the blade alignment is off — this is an expensive problem to fix.
2. Listen for Bearing Noise
Run the machine at full speed and listen carefully. You should only hear the smooth hum of the motor. Any grinding, rattling, or whirring noise means the main bearings are worn out — replacing them is a major job that can cost as much as the machine itself. Never buy a machine with noisy bearings without factoring in the rebuild cost.
3. Check the Blade Guides
The blade guides hold the band knife perfectly straight. Worn guides mean the blade will wander, leading to uneven splits. Ask the seller how many hours the guides have, and check for visible wear on the guide surfaces. If the guides are worn, they need to be replaced before the machine will split accurately.
4. Verify Parts Availability
Some older, obscure brands of splitting machines are no longer supported, and replacement parts simply don't exist anymore. If you buy one of these, the first time a wear part breaks, your machine becomes a paperweight.
This is why used Camoga machines are the best used value: every part is still manufactured, and (if you buy from us) we have every part in stock ready to ship. All our new SAMA machines use the exact same parts, so you'll never be stuck waiting for a part.
5. Check the Feed Mechanism
Run the machine through its full speed range (0-20 m/min) and make sure the feed speed is smooth and consistent, no jerking or slipping. If the feed roller slips or the speed is inconsistent, you'll get uneven splits and waste material. Make sure the feed pressure adjusts smoothly, too.
6. Ask About Previous Use
A machine that ran a single tannery doing only full-grain cow hide will have lasted much better than a machine that ran 3 shifts a day cutting synthetic materials or abraded material, which wears parts much faster. Ask the seller what material the machine was processing, and how many shifts a day it ran.
7. Buy From a Seller Who Warrants the Machine
Never buy a used splitting machine "as-is" off an auction site or from a private seller with no warranty. Even if you check all the points above, hidden problems always show up within the first month of use. At minimum, buy from a seller who offers 30-90 days of warranty, and who can supply replacement parts and support after the sale.
