What is a band knife?
A band knife is a steel blade welded into a closed loop, tensioned between a large drive flywheel and a smaller idler wheel. As the wheels turn, the blade travels in one continuous direction past the cutting point. Because the cutting edge is always moving in the same direction, the leather is sliced rather than crushed — which is why a band knife leaves a clean, uniform surface instead of the torn or compressed edge you get from a reciprocating blade.
Every SAMA splitting machine is a band knife machine. The blade standard is the same one used on Italian Camoga equipment, so replacement knives and guide parts are interchangeable.
Why band knife machines hold tighter tolerances
- Continuous cut. No start-stop marks, so thickness variation across a pass stays inside a few hundredths of a millimetre.
- Constant edge geometry. The built-in grinding unit dresses the edge while the machine runs, so the cut stays sharp across a full shift instead of degrading after the first hour.
- Stable tracking. Blade tracking is adjustable and, once set, the loop runs true on the flywheels. Poor tracking is the single most common cause of thickness drift.
- Rigid frame. SAMA machines use a heavy cast-iron body so the knife-to-roller gap does not shift under load.
Blade sharpening: the part operators get wrong
A dull band knife does not stop cutting — it starts tearing. The symptoms are a fuzzy split surface, a wedge-shaped thickness profile across the width, and burning smell on some materials. The usual cause is that the sharpening stone has been backed off or the dressing cycle has been skipped.
SAMA machines include built-in automatic blade sharpening, but the unit still needs occasional setting and the stone needs replacing. Our maintenance checklist is here: band knife blade maintenance.
Common band knife problems and their causes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness varies across the width | Blade not parallel to feed roller | Re-set roller-to-knife gap, check tracking |
| Fuzzy or torn split surface | Dull edge | Sharpening unit engagement, stone condition |
| Blade drifts to one side | Tracking / flywheel alignment | Blade tracking adjustment, wheel cleanliness |
| Uneven feed, material slips | Worn feed roller | Roller surface, feed pressure |
| Blade breaks repeatedly | Excess tension or weld fatigue | Tension setting, weld quality, wheel alignment |

Band knife splitting vs skiving
Both processes use a sharp edge, but the geometry differs. A band knife splitting machine levels the entire surface of the piece as it passes through. Skiving thins a local area — usually an edge that has to be folded or joined. If your goal is uniform thickness across a panel, you need a band knife splitting machine, not a skiver. The distinction is covered in splitting vs skiving.

Blades and spare parts
Band knives, guide assemblies and common wear parts are stocked for immediate shipment, and they fit Camoga-standard machines as well as ours. If you run a Camoga machine today, your existing blade stock will fit a SAMA machine. Details: Camoga spare parts and SAMA vs Camoga comparison.
Also known as: other names for a band knife splitting machine
Buyers rarely agree on one name for this machine. Depending on the market, the exact same equipment is listed as any of the following — all of which SAMA builds.
| Term you may have searched | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| Band knife leather splitting machine | The full technical term — a loop blade running over two wheels, cutting at a fixed gap |
| Band knife splitter / bandknife machine | Same machine, shortened; "bandknife" as one word is also common |
| Leather splitting machine | The broader category name; band knife is the dominant construction within it |
| Leather skiving machine | Often used interchangeably with splitting in supplier listings. Strictly, skiving thins an edge or local area, not the whole surface |
| Leather peeling machine / leather thinning machine | Regional wording for the same thickness-reducing function |
| Hide splitting machine | Splitting whole hides rather than cut pieces |
| Splitting & skiving machine | Combined or convertible units handling both operations |
Frequently asked questions
What does a band knife splitting machine do?
It levels leather to a uniform thickness using a continuously running loop blade. The piece passes between a feed roller and the knife; the gap between them sets the finished thickness.
How thin can a band knife machine split?
On SAMA machines, 0.1 mm with a pressure foot setup and about 0.5 mm with a roller setup. Firm leather holds thin splits better than soft, stretchy material.
How often does the blade need sharpening?
SAMA machines sharpen automatically during operation, so there is no manual cycle in normal production. The grinding stone is a consumable and needs periodic replacement, and the unit should be re-set if the split surface starts to look fuzzy.
Are SAMA band knives compatible with Camoga machines?
Partly. The S420C, S520C, S420RC+ and S520RC+ interchange fully with the Camoga C420, C520, C420LC+ and C520LC+ respectively. Wearing parts such as grinding wheels, sharpening belts and felt use one specification across every SAMA model, while band knife blades are matched to each machine model.
What causes uneven splitting thickness?
Most often the knife is no longer parallel to the feed roller, or blade tracking has drifted. A dull edge and a worn feed roller produce similar symptoms, so check the sharpening unit and roller surface as well.
Can a band knife machine split synthetic material?
Yes, within limits — PU, PVC and some technical textiles can be split, but feed pressure, blade sharpness and speed need adjusting. Send us a sample and we will test it before you buy.
What is the HS code for a band knife splitting machine?
Most customs authorities classify these machines under heading 8453.10.00 — machinery for preparing, tanning or working hides, skins or leather. The exact subheading depends on the destination country and the machine configuration, so verify it with your customs broker. We provide the commercial invoice, packing list and technical data sheet required for import clearance.
