Leather Skiving Machine — Splitting and Edge Skiving in One Machine
If you searched for a leather skiving machine, a leather splitter or a skiving machine, you are most likely facing one of two jobs: thinning a whole hide to an even thickness, or shaving down the edge of a cut piece so it folds, stitches or bonds cleanly. SAMA band knife machines do both, which is why they are often called skiving-splitting machines.
What is a leather skiving machine?
A leather skiving machine reduces leather thickness in one of two ways:
- Splitting (thinning). The whole piece is passed between a feed roller and a band knife, levelling the entire surface to a uniform thickness — for example taking a 2.2 mm hide down to 1.2 mm for bag panels.
- Edge skiving (paring). Only the edge or a marked zone is thinned, usually into a taper, so a seam sits flat, a strap folds neatly, or an edge turns without bulk. On SAMA machines this is done with special tooling and the pressure foot.
Strictly speaking “skiving” means the second operation and “splitting” the first. In practice many workshops use the two words interchangeably, so a band knife machine that covers both saves you from buying two separate machines.
How SAMA machines handle both splitting and skiving
The core of every SAMA machine is a continuously running band knife — a closed loop of hardened steel running over two flywheels — with a rubber feed roller drawing the leather past it. The roller-to-knife gap sets the finished thickness.
- For splitting, the full width passes through at 0–20 m/min (stepless). Thickness is set mechanically on C-series or numerically on RC+ CNC models, and stays within a few hundredths of a millimetre across the pass.
- For edge skiving, optional tooling plus the pressure foot thins a controlled edge zone or taper — used on shoe uppers, belt ends, strap turnovers and gussets.
- Built-in sharpening dresses the blade while running, so the cut surface stays clean on both thin splits and fine edge work.
Our leather skiving / splitting machine range
The model number tracks the working width, so the choice is mostly how wide your material runs. All models share the same band knife principle, the same Camoga-compatible blade and parts standard, and the same frame construction.
| Model | Working width | Min. splitting thickness | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| S320C | 320 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | Watch straps, wallets, small leather goods |
| S360C | 360 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | Bag panels, belts, insoles |
| S420C | 420 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | Shoe uppers, medium bag panels |
| S520C | 520 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | Full hides, larger panels |
| S620C | 620 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | Garment and furniture leather |
| S420RC+ | 420 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | CNC precision work |
| S520RC+ | 520 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | CNC precision work |
| S620RC+ | 620 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | CNC precision work |
| S840RC+ | 840 mm | 0.1 mm (foot) / 0.5 mm (roller) | Extra-wide hides |
Splitting vs skiving: which do you need?
- You split when the whole piece must be thinner and even. Typical sign: your panels vary in thickness and downstream cutting, skiving and sewing drift out of tolerance.
- You skive when only the edge or a fold line must be thinner. Typical sign: seams are too bulky, edges won't turn, or strap ends won't fold cleanly.
Because a SAMA band knife machine covers both, most workshops buy one machine and add the edge tooling, rather than running a separate splitter and a separate skiving machine. We confirm the right setup for your material before quoting.
Applications by industry
- Shoe factories — uppers, counters, linings, edge skiving for flat seams.
- Bags & leather goods — panels, straps, gussets, belt ends.
- Garment & automotive — consistent-thickness leather for cutting and laminating.
Blades, spare parts and Camoga compatibility
Blade size is matched to each model (for example the S420C takes a 3500×50×0.7 mm band knife, the S520RC+ a 3950×60×0.8 mm). Wearing parts — wool felt, grinding wheels, scrapers, feed rollers — are interchangeable with the Camoga C420 / C520 / C420LC+ / C520LC+ range. See the full model cross-reference.
Frequently asked questions
Is a skiving machine the same as a splitting machine?
Not exactly. Skiving thins the edge or a zone; splitting levels the whole piece. A band knife machine with edge tooling does both.
What is the thinnest you can skive?
Down to 0.1 mm with the pressure foot, or 0.5 mm with the top feed roller, at a tolerance of a few hundredths of a millimetre.
Can one machine split and skive?
Yes — SAMA band knife machines split full width and, with optional tooling, skive edges and tapers. This is the standard setup for most shoe and bag workshops.
Are your parts compatible with Camoga?
For C420 / C520 / C420LC+ / C520LC+ the wearing parts are fully interchangeable, and we stock spares for every Camoga model.
